SAR Compatriots Support “Veterans Without Families Program”
Compatriot members of the Withlacoochee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution recently visited the Florida State Veterans Nursing Home (Baldomero Lopez) in Land O’ Lakes, FL, to present those veterans without families, Christmas gifts of items badly in need by these individuals. The “Veterans Without Families Program" was created by the chapter in early 2006, and the first visit to the home was in December 2006. This was a cooperative project between the Withlacoochee Chapter of the SAR and the Homosassa Walmart store. From the original start date, to the current year, the equivalent of approximately $43,000 has been donated to the veterans without families residing at the home. The approximate number of veterans without known relatives that have been served in those years averages over 14 per year. For the first 5 years the veteran list was only men, but that changed and recently there have been as many as 3 women veterans on the annual gift list. The State Veterans Nursing Home has also changed from a much older average age to a bit younger average over the past few years. The veterans wish list of gifts has changed from clothing only, to include electronic items and electric razors. In addition, the Withlacoochee Chapter always provides at least one Christmas gift for all of the veterans residing at the home to enjoy, with the gifts ranging from a large TV's to a mobile TV/VCR/DVD combination cart, for those veterans who are unable to get out and join their brothers and sisters in the home gathering areas for scheduled movies. Pictured are members and wives of the Withlacoochee Chapter of the SAR, along with personnel of the veterans nursing home.
