Withlacoochee Chapter SAR Announces Knight Essay winners
The Withlacoochee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution announces the winners of the George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest. The contest is sponsored by the National Society of the SAR and is open to all US Citizen and Legal Resident students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools in that same grade range. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed this program on the 2017-2018 NASSP List of Approved Contests, Programs, and Activities for Students
To participate, students must submit an original 800- to 1200-word essay based on an event, person, philosophy or ideal associated with the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United States Constitution. Each student essay is judged based on its historical accuracy, clarity, organization, grammar and spelling, and documentation.
The first-place winner at the Withlacoochee Chapter level of judging, with a cash prize of $200 in the 2019-2020 contest, was Rachel E. Sheppard, of the Sheppard Home Education Program in Inverness, FL. Rachel is a 12th grade student, and her essay was entitled “ Marquis De Lafayette: Frenchman with a Heart for Liberty”. Her essay has also won first-place, with a cash prize of $1000 at the Florida Society SAR level of judging. Her essay now proceeds for judging at the National Society of the SAR.
