The third place winner was Reese McVickers of the West Hernando Christian School of Spring Hill. Reese was awarded the Certificate of Recognition and a cash award of $50.
The theme for this contest was “The Last Naval Battle of the American Revolutionary War.” The battle occurred on March 10, 1783, when two American ships encountered three British ships just south of Cape Canaveral. The American 36-gun frigate Alliance was carrying 72,000 Spanish-milled silver dollars to be delivered to Congress. Two of the British ships did not participate in the Battle due to the threat of an approaching French ship. The Alliance under the command of Captain John Barry fought and defeated the 28-gun British frigate Sybil, and the two American ships continued on to their destination, one to Philadelphia, and the Alliance to Newport, Rhode Island.
